About the role
At fish in a bottle, we’re passionate about crafting beautiful, meaningful game worlds that are as technically solid as they are visually striking.
As a Technical Environment Artist, you’ll be at the centre of this process, combining artistic flair with technical precision to create immersive, optimised environments. This role isn’t just about building assets, it’s about shaping believable, engaging spaces that enhance gameplay and bring our games to life.
Your work will be at the heart of our games. From material creation and lighting to modular kits and trim sheets, you’ll have the freedom to contribute your expertise while collaborating closely with developers, designers, and artists.
What you'll be doing
- Creating large open world environments.
- Creating and optimising environment assets, materials, and modular kits in Unreal Engine 5.
- Developing trim sheets, lighting setups, and textures that enhance realism and performance.
- Applying optimisation techniques, including LOD creation, suitable tri-counts, and real-time lighting solutions.
- Working through the full asset pipeline, from high/mid/low poly modelling to UV unwrapping, baking, and texturing.
- Collaborating with the team to ensure environments are visually cohesive and technically sound.
- Supporting level creation and ensuring assets fit within tri-budgets and project art styles.
What we're looking for
- Strong experience with Substance Designer, Substance Painter, Blender, and Unreal Engine 5.
- Proven ability in material creation, real-time lighting, and asset optimisation.
- Skilled in modular design and trim sheets, with a realistic art style focus.
- Solid understanding of traditional art principles (colour, form, proportions).
- Great attention to detail, with a methodical, problem-solving mindset.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to write clear documentation.
- Great team spirit.
Bonus points if you have
- Some experience with Blueprints or animation/rigging in Unreal.
- Experience working in Unity.
- Familiarity with source control (Bitbucket, Sourcetree), Jira, or Confluence.
- Experience completing a full game development cycle, from pre-production to release.

Things to know
This is a full time, 12 month contract, remote working position.
There is the need to travel from time to time to attend client and company meetings. Please consider your ability to travel occasionally when applying for this position.
